Introduction

Re:Living is the next step by VELUX to push the boundaries on how our buildings can benefit both people and planet. It builds on lessons from our Living Places pioneer project, decades of healthy building research and full scale experiments, to shift the impact of our existing building stock, with a more holistic view, from problem to solution. Today, the built environment is responsible for nearly 40% of global emissions, 1 in 3 Europeans are exposed to indoor climate hazards and 146 million buildings across Europe needing upgrades by 2050, so the opportunity and responsibility for change is significant. We are taking action because reducing harm is no longer enough.

Re:Living is an experiment that expands our considerations to include human well-being and biodiversity, as part of a long-term commitment to lead the building industry toward healthier, more sustainable practices rooted in VELUX’s founding principle: to benefit both people and planet.

Experiment

The Re:Living experiment begins by identifying key challenges and opportunities, then brings together collaborators, experts and industry pioneers to co-create ideas. These ideas are shaped into concepts, tested through real-world prototypes, and finally scaled with pioneer partners to drive broader impact.

People and Planet Model

Every building project, whether new or existing, involves a series of important decisions. The People and Planet Model combines earth-system limits and human health boundaries to provide a framework for creating the buildings we need for the planet we want. The health of people and the planet are intrinsically linked. To guide the industry toward a holistic understanding of the built environment, we created the People & Planet Model which brings the two together: Earth System Science to define the limits that keep the planet stable and Building Biology to define the conditions people need to thrive indoors.

Wellbeing roundtable

What if the future is already built? The buildings we live in hold the key to a more sustainable future, yet today, they waste energy and drive nearly 40% of global emissions. Re:Living is an experiment to transform renovation into a holistic movement for human well-being, circularity, and biodiversity, turning homes into solutions for people and the planet.

Biodiversity is integral to Re:Living, by ensuring that renovation goes beyond energy efficiency to explore the restoration of ecosystems and create thriving habitats. By understanding the connection between nature and our built environment, Re:Living transforms homes into spaces that actively support life benefiting both people and the planet.
