Building Type

Multi-storey housing (mixed-use potential)

Approach

Regenerative housing concept focused on low climate impact, shared living, and flexible use

LEV Huset, Copenhagen

LEV Huset explores how future housing in dense urban areas can be designed to use fewer resources while improving quality of life. Developed as part of the Levantkaj masterplan in Nordhavn, the project responds to increasing urbanisation and pressure on housing in Copenhagen.

The concept focuses on combining compact living with shared spaces, creating housing that supports different lifestyles, from singles and families to shared living communities.

At its core, LEV Huset aims to show how we can live well on less space, while strengthening social interaction and connection to the city.

About the project
About the project

LEV Huset is designed as a flexible building system that can adapt over time. The structure allows for different uses such as housing, workspace, or community functions, depending on changing needs.

The building integrates:

  • Compact private units combined with generous shared spaces
  • A central daylight atrium bringing light deep into the building
  • Flexible layouts that can evolve with user needs

The project is developed to support both everyday living and long-term adaptability in a dense city context.

Materials and climate strategy

LEV Huset is designed with a strong focus on reducing climate impact. The strategy includes:

  • Extensive use of reused materials

  • Integration of biogenic (CO₂-storing) materials

  • Limiting the use of new concrete

  • Designing for reuse and long building lifespan

Initial studies indicate a significantly lower climate impact compared to conventional buildings, depending on final design choices.

Urban integration

Located in Levantkaj, the building is part of a larger masterplan for Nordhavn. It is conceived as a “generator building” contributing identity and variation within the new district.

The project emphasises:

  • Active ground floors and strong connection to the street
  • Integration with surrounding public spaces and waterfront
  • Contribution to biodiversity and local urban life‌

Vision

The ambition is to demonstrate how future housing can:

  • Reduce resource use per person

  • Support new ways of living together

  • Lower environmental impact while maintaining quality of life
