More Than a House – An Experiment in Transformation (DRAFT)
The new LKR Innovation House book tells the story of a remarkable architectural transformation. How we transformed a timber warehouse from 1995 in Østbirk, Denmark, into the innovative heart of VELUX - a vibrant workplace designed for turning ideas into reality.
Through architecture, engineering and experimentation, the project demonstrates how existing buildings can be reimagined for a healthier and more sustainable future. The book documents the ideas, people and design principles that shaped the transformation, offering a detailed look at how a warehouse became a world class innovation hub for more than 500 employees working across research, development and design
The book is more than a project story. At a time when the construction industry faces urgent climate challenges, the project demonstrates how renovation, material reuse and human-centered design can reduce environmental impact while creating better places to work.
Through essays, interviews and photographic documentation, the book explores transformation as continuity — a way of working with what already exists. LKR Innovation House emerges as more than a house: an experiment extended over time aiming to contribute to a broader dialogue on how buildings can support both people and planet.
