More Than a House – An Experiment in Transformation
In the new LKR Innovation House book, we tell the story of a remarkable architectural transformation. We transformed a timber warehouse from 1995 in Østbirk, Denmark, into the innovative heart of VELUX, a vibrant workplace designed for turning ideas into reality. Through this project, we demonstrate an approach to transforming existing buildings as part of the VELUX Group’s Re:Living strategy, which focuses on the potential of the existing building stock. At the same time, the project serves as an example of a healthy workspace in balance with people and planet.
Through architecture, engineering and experimentation, we show how existing buildings can be reimagined for a healthier and more sustainable future. The book documents the ideas, people and design principles that shaped the transformation, offering a detailed look at how a warehouse became a world-class innovation hub for more than 500 employees working across research, development and design.
The book is more than a project story. At a time when the construction industry faces urgent climate challenges, we demonstrate how renovation, material reuse and human-centred design can reduce environmental impact while creating better places to work.
Through essays, interviews and photographic documentation, we explore transformation as continuity, a way of working with what already exists. LKR Innovation House emerges as more than a house: an experiment extended over time that aims to contribute to a broader dialogue on how buildings can support both people and planet.
